I’m really not sure how I’m supposed to give a 10-minute presentation on a final paper topic that I’ve really only half-assed

also if anyone knows of any movies or TV shows (must be US-made) that have an asian (pref. chinese) character speaking with accented english that’d be gr9

trying to show how language marks Otherness in media

Reblogging in case anybody has some ideas…

accented like stereotypical? or an actor who has an accent?

Jackie Chan movies (especially ones from the early 90s) are good since some of them are him dubbing over his original dialogue. Rumble in the Bronx and Mr. Nice Guy come to mind.

hmm both are okay though I might narrow it down later

thanks!

The Karate Kid sprung to mind. And of course you’ve got all the Charlie Chan films, which are problematic in multiple ways- they started out with Asian actors playing him before they decided to go with white actors. Good times.

I did enjoy Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet though! I saw it in my Asian American studies film class and thought it was very interesting.
